Voice Over Research

The particular teaser trailers I have watched and felt fitted in with the style I wanted to create, such as "(500) Days Of Summer" and "Inception" used the idea of a voice over. In order for me to make my voice over effective, I have decided that I should transcribe the voice over to "500 Days Of Summer", also re-listening to other voice overs in order to generate the feel for a professional one.

The voice over for "500 Days Of Summer" - the teaser trailer.
"[Temper Trap - The Sweet Disposition starts playing]
This is not a love story. It's a story about love. [Music carry's on playing.]
500 days of Los Angeles. Of promises. Of uncertainty. Of summer.
[music carry's on playing]

Fox Searchlight Pictures presents 500 days of summer.

[Music carry's on playing. The tempo speeds up as well as the cuts of the
shots.]

500 days of magic. Of distance. Of tenderness. Starring Joseph - Gordon Levitt as Tom & Zooey Deschannel as Summer. 500 days of intimacy, of awkwardness. Of passion. 500 days of fury. Of ecstasy. Of summer.

500 days of summer.

[Music stops on a drum beat]

coming soon."

After hearing this voice over, then writing it out, I feel as if I need to use short sentences in order to include many points about the film which could possibly be created. I like this voice over as it doesn't give too much away, but enough to tell the audience who they want to target what the film is about.

I think that the use of a voice over is very important, as it is able to capture the audience's attention, but also allowing those people who learn better by listening to be reached, as a voice over is able to get to you. Some voice overs display emotion towards what they are saying, which can also have an effect on an audience as it helps them to understand about the film.

My Target Audience

The target audience for my teaser trailer is people who enjoy watching films that not many people will have seen. My audience will be girls and guys who like exploring into different things that not many others will bother trying.

The girls will be 17-20 years old; and their interests will include Elle and Vogue magazine. They will very much enjoy looking at the quirky london fashion - and the pages in Grazia showing street chic style. These girls will fantasize over celebrities such as Gerard Butler, Joseph-Gordon Levitt and Paolo Nuitini. Their music taste will also be like their film taste. unknown is the word. unknown is how they like it. They will like 'The Smiths', 'She And Him' and Brandon Flowers. Okay, maybe known a little bit - but not to everyone. Their hair colour and clothing size varies - and they will take style advice from people such as Alexa Chung, Pixie Lott and Florence Welsh, but not literally.

The guys will also be 17-20, maybe a bit older in order for them to take it seriously. They will only be interested in their music magazines - maybe mens health. NME will be one of the only things in their magazine racks, as they want to know what's in. They don't care much about impressing girls, although they like them very much. The men and women in our target audience would very much suite each other and they would have a lot in common.

They will both be messy, picking their outfits out from their floor. The clothes would be patterned, weird and many would envy them. They will be opinionated but they won't care about others opinion. They take a lot of what others have to say on the chin.

This is the target audience for my teaser trailer, as I feel that the idea of using elements of social realism would very much interest them.

Marc Webb - Director Research

Marc Webb has caught my eye with his work such as "500 Days Of Summer" and some of his music videos which he has directed. He has only recently started to direct filmography, however, I like his quirky style that can be seen within the music video 'Better' - Regina Spektor. He has been a music director for over 10 years, hence why there is currently only one film which he has directed.

Within the teaser trailer for "500 Days Of Summer" I saw that he has made it so that it feels as if we are following two characters; without seeing anybody else who is in the film. I very much like the idea of basing my teaser trailer on one, maybe two characters - as it helps to tell a story within such a short time period.

What I like about the trailer "500 Days Of Summer"
Along with the teaser trailer for "(500) days of summer, comes a caption. The caption reads "Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn't. This post modern love story is never what we expect it to be -- It's thorny yet exhilarating, funny and sad, a twisted journey of highs and lows that doesn't quite go where we think it will. When Tom, a hapless greeting card copywriter and hopeless romantic, is blindsided after his girlfriend summer dumps him, he shifts back and forth through various periods of their 500 days "together" to try to figure out where things went wrong. His reflections ultimately lead him to finally rediscover his true passions in life." When we then go on to watch the trailer, what we have just read seems as if this id not for the same thing.

The reason why it works as a teaser trailer is because it is somewhat unclear as to what it means by summer, as we follow a guy and a girl, but also it is filmed in L.A - which is deemed to be a nice weathered place.

It says near the start of the teaser trailer "500 days of Los Angeles, of promises" which immediately throws the audience of balance, as they are somewhat confused as to what 'summer' is.

The target audience for this film could easily be women - but also men. The film tells a story about love - but from the mens side. The slightly indie, yet RomCom style suites to everybody from any age.

A review (from a man's point of view)
Rare is the summer film that seems to understand something about me besides my love of things blowing up. I think guys at a certain period in their life will connect with this film mere hours after seeing it and will want to – and should – see it again. There are things in this movie that hit on a very real emotional undercurrent, and there aren’t a lot of movies that try to talk to guys like He’s Just Not That Into You was made to talk to women. I have my Summer and chances are you have your Summer too.

Why we are ideally meant to feel teased
The director, Marc Webb, has used a very pretty - yet quirky actress (Zoeey Deschanel) to make the audience understand what the character of Tom is going through. Her beautiful face, thick fringe and fashion make us feel like how Tom feels - which is the whole point of the film. To see where he went wrong. The trailer immediately gives us questions which we can only really answer by seeing the film. This is why we feel teased.

Small trailer ideas

Finishing credits idea

Last night, I watched the recently made film '17 Again' which shows how a man has got so lost with his life, that he ends up being taken back to when he was 17, so that he could amend the problems that he had as a grown man (which consists of a divorce to his teenage sweet-heart and also distance between his children).

During the end credits of the film I got an idea of how I could start or end my trailer. At the moment I am liking the idea of an animated opening with the idea of a year book with still pictures from my filming work.

There has been some technical difficulties with Youtube, so I am unable to embedd the video with the ending of this film, so if you click Here and skip to 4.50 minutes - so that you are able to gather what my idea is like.

Camera shot idea 29/9/10

One of my ideas is to take a camera with my on my family holiday to America, where I have had two ideas to do

  • an aerial shot of NYC whilst visiting the rocker feller centre (maybe at night)
  • and to stand in the middle of times square and hold the camera whilst doing a 360 pan, which will look like a point of view of my protagonist character, then fading into a 360 pan but in England.

Pitch Ideas

The ideas which I have so far have been collaborated together in a powerpoint which you are able to see down below. So far I have only got the plot idea and the location ideas. This week I will be designing my initial storyboard, also experimenting with camera shots.

Powerpoint

Initial ideas

Here I have decided to include some pictures which I have found, which have instantly inspired me with my ideas. A lot of these pictures can easily fit in with the story that I want to use. These are my first ideas, so I will post some more inspirational pictures up soon.

To conclude, the blogs which have most inspired me with continuing to produce ideas are in the far right links box under the title of 'initial ideas help'.

My top 3 teaser trailers

Amelie Teaser Trailer - Jean Pierre Jeunet

I love the quirky feel that we get when we watch this teaser trailer. The establishing shot at the start shows us the word 'brasserie' which suggests that we are in France, however, we don't see any iconic features such as the Eiffel Tower or Champs Elysees which can suggest that the place plays a major part in the story-line. The title 'Amelie' suggests that we are going to be following one person around - with the teaser trailer then showing only her life fulfills the idea that the film is almost going to be a visual diary of her life. The music which is used, like the editing, suggests that her life is fast paced and almost like a fairy-tale. The scenes which have been used represent the best parts of her life, such as the cheeky bedroom scene and also having this fun life roaming around the streets with a guy. When Amelie is in bed with the guy, she has eye contact all the time with the audience which suggests that she wants you to come and see the film and be a girl and laugh at all of the happenings.

Going The Distance Teaser Trailer

The teaser trailer for this film is the smallest that I have seen so far whilst doing research into various types of teaser trailers, however, within the 32 seconds they have released the basic plot which I am able to understand and generate a basic interest for the new film. The reason why I like this teaser trailer is because it shows a 'naturalistic' theme. I like how this teaser trailer shows a theme which can happen in life (in only 30 seconds) which the audience feel as if they can relate to.

500 days of summer

This teaser trailer is one that I like as it has that 'quirky' style that I like; with the naturalistic lighting also naturalistic theme. It is effective because of the name '500 days of summer' as you think it is literally 500 days of the season, not 500 days of a person. I like how the trailer actually relates to the film, and again, similar to Amelie - creates a sense of the two characters being followed in their daily process and no one else is involved. This creates an attachment with the two characters and the audience as they are almost being let into these peoples lives.

Teaser Trailer Research

My Name Is Jerry - An Independent Film Teaser Trailer

This is the first time that I have ever come across this film, as I researched 'independent film teaser trailers' into Youtube. I felt it of great importance that I should watch all of the trailers that were available - and the first one I watched was this. I found it to be weird, as the content which was included at the start had nothing to do with what I watched in the film trailer for this film. I found it to be amusing once I watched this trailer a couple of times, as I realized that you don't necessarily have to include full content from the film, so long as it includes a small basis of the story line - so that the audience are 'teased'. This film was produced by The College Of Fine Arts at Ball State University, the Institute for Digital Entertainment and Education (IDEE), and Clothespin Films, LLC.

Sex And The City 2 Teaser Trailer - Hollywood Conglomerate Film (Big Budget)

This teaser trailer doesn't give too much of what happens in the film away, however, its enough to get us "Carried away" with the plot. They use various establishing shots of places such as New York & Abu Dhabi. We see that the fashion has become increasingly better from the 1st Sex And The City film; and it shows that, in order to understand what is happening in this one, you have to have seen the first film in the sequel. Like the first teaser trailer "My Name Is Jerry" it uses text to almost allow you to read more into what you see which helps to further develop on how much you are being teased - as you start questioning what will happen.

Modern Romance Teaser Trailer - Independent Film Company (WICKED Cinema)

This is the first teaser trailer which I have seen to be so short, so I feel that i need to do some research into how long the average teaser trailer should - and needs to be. I found the editing techniques to be of poorer standard when compared to the other two teaser trailers that I have looked at, however, this is something which I need to look at in more detail - as I will have to decide what type of techniques should be used along with the type of genre I use.

Amelie Teaser Trailer - French Independent Film

Watching this teaser trailer, I get the feeling that it relates to the character of Amelie. Having not watched the film itself, I want to know more about her, because, as an audience member, I feel she is portrayed to be shy yet cheeky, innocent yet provocative and living a fast paced life when she wants to really be in the slow lane. I love the way that this teaser trailer has been edited to almost bring sound to the no speech trailer, also bringing life to the 'dullness' of the colours. Everything contrasts well to tease me - and the audience.

My own definition of what a teaser trailer is

After watching 4 or 5 different types of teaser trailers, I have come to the conclusion that It should Be 1 minute - 1.30 minutes, however the minimum amount of time given should be 40 seconds. The teaser trailer should reveal parts of the film which could be a shared frame of reference if there is a previous film or t.v episode. The audience should find or see something which they will want to know more about as the film release date comes ever nearer.

By the end, we should have an idea on something which could happen, as writing with subtitles should ask questions, however, they should not be answered.

Babylon Dictionary 'Teaser Trailer' definition

A teaser trailer, or teaser is a short trailer used to advertise an upcoming movie, game or television series.

Teasers, unlike typical theatrical trailers, are usually very short in length (between 30–60 seconds) and usually contain little if any actual footage from the film. Sometimes it is merely a truncated version of a theatrical trailer. They are usually released long in advance of the film they advertise.

Preliminary Task

During the last two weeks of year 12, we were asked to copy the first 30 seconds of a music video of our choice. I decided that, instead of working in a group, I would work on my own and copy the first 30 seconds of the song "First Love" which is by an alternative band called The Maccabees.

Here is the original music video (in full) - "First Love" By 'The Maccabees'

Here is my 30 second copy.

With this task I tried to create the same feel that is given off in the original video, by using neutral coloured clothing. I found this task to be hard in some places, but easy in others. It was my first time editing a video, so I had no idea what I was doing. I learnt simple editing techniques such as cutting down parts of a clip, fading, adding music over the top and adding a black screen at the start - which, in the end I did not like.

Introduction to my A2 blog

Today I am setting up my media blog for my second year in studying Media as an A-Level.

We have been told that we are able to do either a remake for a music video, or a teaser trailer. At the moment I prefer the idea of making a teaser trailer, so I am doing some research into teaser trailers for the independent style of film - as I like the idea of creating something that looks as if it has an 'indie' theme also using 'magic hour' lighting and also the quirky clothing and mis-en-scene.

Along with the teaser trailer, I also want to create the package which comes with it - which is a film poster and a DVD cover. As I research teaser trailers, I will also be researching into film posters and also DVD covers.
